There are many other traditions that are continued to this day. The viewing of the sakura (cherry blossoms) in Spring dates back to the Heian era (794 to 1192).

Women then, even nowadays, would wear kimono to watch the sakura in order to show their clothes off. Kimono are long robes, and thickness varies on the type, and it is held closed tight with the obi, a sash tied below the chest, the knot along the back.

There are many events happening at these viewings, often there are places where food is for sale, and drinking places that sell sake (pronounced sah-key), an alcoholic drink.
