Katakana

Katakana written in Katakana

The second character set learned is the katakana. This is used for emphasis, as in an italicised version of hiragana, or forming foreign words. Again there are 46 basic symbols with modifiers to construct the words.

The visual difference between this and hiragana is that these characters are sharper, less rounded than hiragana.
