Types of anime - Part IV

Shoujo literally means 'girl' and this type of anime obviously isn't all to do with death and mass destruction of the world. These are the main points behind shoujo anime:

  • Transformation sequences
  • Love scenes
  • More emotional responses
  • Low violence
  • Beautiful characters

Since the main audience for this type of anime are young girls, the focus is on the characters relationships, and less to do with actual action. 'Magical girl' series are popular, when a girl one way or another gains superpowers in order to stop evil. More often than not they have some small (often cute) creature beside them, a guide that helps them get to grips with their power.

Kero smiling with arms outstretched Kero is the defender of the clow cards, which Sakura unwittingly opened, and he tell her that if she has the power to open the book that contained them, then she has the power to turn them back. He's there for moral support as well as giving hints now and then
Luna looking back apprehensively Luna is sent to find certain girls who are needed to find a crystal to reveal the identity of the Moon Princess. Usagi was found first, followed closely by the others who would make up the group, and Luna stays with them throughout.
